Can I refer myself for the scan?
Yes - You do not need a note from the Doctor. These scan are non-diagnostic and are offered as a reassurance / bonding scan. This gives you the opportunity to see your baby in a relaxed, comfortable environment at a time which is convenient with you.
Do I still have to go for my Hospital Scans?
Yes. These scans are in addition to the hospital scans you receive. It is important that you keep all antenatal scan appointments as they form part of your obstetric care.
Who does the scan - are they qualified?
All scans are performed by highly experienced, qualified Sonographers. The Sonographers are registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC), which sets professional standards, such as a duty of care, which must be adhered to.
How many weeks should I be for the scan?
This is dependent upon the package you have chosen. The scan at 22 weeks is good to be able to see baby in conventional 2d, but it is better to wait until after 24 weeks to see the baby in 3d and 4d.
What should I bring with me?
Please bring your hand held hospital notes.
Can you tell the sex of the baby?
If you desire, we can look for the fetal gender. In most cases it will be possible to see, with an accuracy of 95%. However, sometimes it will not be possible to see the gender.
Is ultrasound safe?
There has been a lot of research in the safety of antenatal scanning over the last 30 years. There are no known effects to the mother or baby. Ultrasound has not been linked to any adverse side effects.
Can I bring someone with me?
You are welcome to bring along family and friends.
Do I need a full bladder?
There is no need for a full bladder for these scans.
What happens if the baby isn't in a good position?
Sometimes the baby may be in an awkward position with his/her head down so we can't get a good view of the face. If this happens, you may go for a walk round and return to see if baby has moved.
What happens if you see an abnormality with the baby?
The 4D bonding scan is not performed to check for fetal abnormalities. However, if an incidental abnormality is detected, we will talk with you, liaise with your maternity unit and provide a report of our findings. Please note, this is rare.
