A genuine bond between the mother and the unborn baby...

AORTA SCREENING SERVICE £50.00

The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It carries all the blood that is pumped out of the heart and distributes it, via its many branches, to all the organs of the body.

What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a thin weakened section of the aorta that bulges outward. Such aneurysms may rupture, causing internal bleeding when they reach a large size. This is often fatal.

Causes

An aortic aneurysm is more common if you are; male, you smoke, aged over 60, have a family history of high blood pressure, have a strong family history of aortic aneurysm or cardiovascular disease, or if you are overweight.

How are aneurysms detected?

Almost always by chance.  Aneurysms are usually discovered during scanning for other conditions as an incidental finding. An ultrasound scan is a quick, accurate and harmless way of detecting abdominal aortic aneurysms and assessing the risk of future rupture. However, it is important to note that it can also confirm that the aorta is normal, giving peace of mind.

The UK National Screening Committee has recommended a national screening programme for AAA for all men aged 65, however this is not yet available on the NHS.

The Ultrasound scan

The scan is performed by a registered, qualified and highly experienced Sonographer. You will be told your results immediately and given a written report.

Booking you scan

You do not have to be referred by a doctor for the scan. However, we do request your GP details when you attend as we send a copy report to your GP if follow up is needed.

If you want to book a scan at one of our sites at Preston or St Helens, or chat to one of our professionals, please do not hesitate to call us on 01772 866200

The cost of the Ultrasound scan is £50.00, which is payable on the day of your scan, either by cheque, card or cash payment.
