This is to confirm that you are pregnant and checks the viability of the pregnancy i.e. to confirm the baby's heartbeat. Measurements of your baby will allow us to determine how many weeks pregnant you are and how many babies you are carrying.

You will take away 4 prints.

This scan is performed after 17 weeks. To determine whether you are having a boy or a girl! or just for a reassurance visit to see your baby.

The Nuchal scan is carried out at 11 to 14 weeks, and is a measurement of the amount of fluid at the back of the baby's neck. This measurement, will give you the risk of your baby having a chromosonal abnormality (Down's syndrome) Please see the Nuchal Translucency page for a more detailed explanation of the procedure.

This scan can be performed from 24 weeks gestation, and provides an assessment of the overall development and growth of the baby. We will:

• measure the baby to check it is developing within normal limits
• Check the baby's organs to exclude any major abnormalities
• Check the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby
• Give you the estimated fetal weight of your baby
• Check the position of your placenta
• We can tell you the sex of your baby if required

You will be given a pregnancy progress report to take away and 4 prints.
